I’m Heather, a Level 6 OCN-accredited holistic sleep coach and founder of Nurturing Sleep Support. I have worked as a nanny and maternity nurse for 20 years, but first and foremost, I am a mum to two young children.
From the beginning of my career studying Advanced Study of Early Years at university, I have spent over 20 years working with and learning about children and their development.
I have worked with numerous families, witnessing and experiencing first-hand the trials and tribulations surrounding children’s sleep and the all-encompassing effect it has on the whole family. I have then lived it myself 24/7 with my own children through the hormonal rollercoaster that is being a mum.
I have been woken up 10 plus times a night. I have been so sleep deprived that I have felt I can’t function normally. I have obsessed over ‘wake windows’ and nap times. I have isolated myself to the house to try and have ‘proper’ naps in the cot rather than buggy, car or on me!! I have held my baby whilst crying myself, feeling like my baby is broken and I am a failure as a parent because my baby won’t sleep when I’m told they should. I have sat in baby groups constantly comparing my baby to others. When I was at a total loss as to what to do I even reluctantly followed mainstream sleep training plans, leaving my baby to cry alone despite this being completely against my mothering instinct. I have been there.
Finally, I stopped and thought there must be a better way, one that sits better with my natural mothering instinct and doesn’t damage mine or my baby’s mental health. So I made it my mission to learn all I could about sleep biology and child temperament. I did find a better way, which felt right and allowed me to RESPOND to my child! Now I want to help other families who have similar feelings to mine.
Though I felt happy with my new choices, parenting can still be hard, it is 24/7 after all! I felt that I could not complain or offload to anyone because I had chosen this path, going against the norm - ‘You brought this on yourself’, ‘you made a rod for your own back’ rang in my ears. I was happy with my decision to use more responsive, gentle parenting techniques. I did not want to change anything, but I wanted to feel more confident and empowered with my choices. With this in mind, when building Nurturing Sleep Support, it was important to me that alongside offering support in finding strategies that feel right to families that we also offer a support service, an outlet to offload, a listening ear.
I aim to blend all my areas of skills and expertise with children and families, together with my counselling training, to provide an effective and empathetic approach to sleep support.
Having trained as a Holistic Sleep Coach with the prestigious Lyndsey Hookway, I have been fortunate to have access to arguably one of the most in-depth, up-to-date, evidence-based and responsive sleep coach education programmes in the world! I am also so fortunate to still have her as a mentor!
